LH have put online their new services which will operate non stop from FRA to CCU. Initially these flights will be 3 per week starting mid December with the option of going daily at a later stage.Flights will be operated with the Airbus 340-300 aircraft.Anybody knows the capacity of this aircraft.
Great news for CCU after the low of seeing MH,RJ and 3K bidding addieu to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport earlier this year. MH's loads were not too bad considering their awful loads to BLR. Their withdrawal was probably for some other reason than non viability.Hope to see MH back in CCU soon.
BA have unofficially stated that they will double their frequencies from the current 3 per week soon.Any news when this is likely to happen.Alitalia have been awarded rights to operate from CCU.
Also if we could get an idea of loads of airlines(BA,AI to LHR,EK,TG,SQ,GF) operating from CCU, it would be great.
Good to see what i had initially stated for LHs frequency to CCU being confirmed.. it was expected sometime sooner rather than later...
The configurations can be changed depending on loads.... its not normally a fixed version which will operate throughout the year...
for example BOM sees all the different versions of the 747-400 except for the new business class versions... however that said.... of late BOM has recieved the new business class products fairly often..
some versions standard for the 747-400 are
16/78/274 16/99/234 16/64/310 for the old business class products... and 16/80/234 for the new business class products
similarly the A340-300s have different configurations... the specifics of which will be governed by the type of loads the station generates as also the revenue that will be expected to be generated depending on the client status.... there are specific market dynamics that i am not at liberty to discuss for the fear of them being misinterpreted or generating un necessary attention.

Actually LH flew to CCU a long time ago. It was their first INDIAN Destiation. Then As Mumbai and Delhi became the financial and commercial hubs they switched there. Welcome back to CCU LH! But the connection times arent that great from the US midwest adn east coast. Involves a huge wait in FRA, and waiting there isn't too fun i must say...WHy did LH pick those times for the flight??? Lack of late morning slots?
LH doesnt have 100% freedom to decide the timings... they are decided keeping in mind slots available both at FRA and at CCU as also the restricted night operations at FRA which exists almost for all european major hubs.
First and foremost though... the slots at any indian airport are decided by the Govt agency responsible and in a huge portion by the national carrier... ie Air India.
as for the outbound connections..... LH have the best conenctions on the trans atlantic sectors.. its been our strongest point from the start... something not even AF/BA/KLm could match... or rather... still cant match..
the_380, CCU or Kolkata is one of the llarger Indian airports. They have night landing since ages.Infact BA,TG,SQ along with a number of domestic airlines all arrive at night.Similarly LH's A343 will also be arriving at night.
Lufthansa resumes Kolkata-Frankfurt flight after 35 years Kolkata, Dec 2 (UNI)
After a gap of 35 years, German airline Lufthansa today resumed passenger services connecting Frankfurt and Kolkata with three weekly flights. The German carrier made Kolkata its sixth destination after Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad in its Lufthansa-India network, airline officials told reporters. Lufthansa had stopped its flights in 1971 on security grounds due to the naxalite agitation in the state. The airline operated a 235-seater non-stop Airbus A340-300 between Frankfurt and Kolkata with a three class configuration making its presence across in all the six metros in India with a total of 45 weekly flights. Airport officials said the inaugural flight landed at the N S C Bose international airport with 215 passengers, including a high-level German business delegation. The flight’s frequency could be increased with the rise in business, since the airline was permitted to operate 50 flights a week as per a new Indo-German Air Traffic Agreement. A 40-member delegation comprising German businessmen and top officials arrived here on the inaugural flight from Frankfurt. The fare in economy class would be Rs 19,500 both ways without taxes. The flight has special in-flight innovations like access to high-speed wireless internet, Bengali food and touch of Indian culture. Lufthansa has already opened its own office at Salt Lake.
I was on the second CCU-FRA flight on December 7. Load was (according to the Indian Steward) 35%, but he said loads were increasing to around 80% leading upto March. He said loads will increase as awareness improves of this flight.
At check-in, there were a lot of high-ranking LH officials who were eager to make sure all was fine. Staff at check-in were very courteous.
Saw the crew boarding the flight. I counted 4 guys for the cockpit and 14 FAs. Of the 14, there was 1 Indian Steward and 1 Air hostess. On the flight the Indian guy (I think his name was Vaidyalingam) was very active whereas the air-hostess was not much to be seen. He was fluent in German, whereas the lady did not see to know German since she was talking to the German air hostesses in English.
It was interesting how the station manager dictated the boarding announcement to one of the ground staff, she wrote it down on a notepad, and was reading it out from the announcement booth. I guess by now, she has by-hearted it.
Equipment was Airbus 340-300. Seats were 2-4-2 configuration. But no in-seat video, just the old drop-down monitors. I was hoping they would put new equipment on this new route, but alas. Aircraft was clean. Near the toilets and the galley, I saw a mark saying HotSpot (I guess it was for Internet access).
Takeoff was scheduled at 05:10 but actual takeoff was at 04:55, since load was less (even on the incoming flight from FRA) so deplaning finished fast, boarding was announced early and completed quite early.
Flight path was interesting - over Afghanistan, central asia, Moscow and then westwards and south-west over Warsay, Berlin and onto Frankfurt. Wonder why flight path was not over Iran and the Black sea - journey would have been shorter.
Food was excellent by LH standards. After takeoff, food was served. I took Noodles with chicken, and before landing in FRA, breakfast was served where I took spinach omlette with bread. Unfortunately for me, they did not have the sof-melt-in-mouth Croissants which LH offers multiple helpings normally.
Landing in FRA was 10 min before scheduled 11:00 arrival, since there was congestion and strong winds.
The aircraft parked in a really remote bay at Frankfurt (near the cargo terminal) and it took a 10 minute bus ride before arriving at the arrival gate, which was Terminal B in my case.
Later, i flew LH to Munich and a round trip Munich-Lisbon by LH amd Lisbon-Munich by TAP Portugal (which is a Star Alliance partner). Will post that trip-report later.
Good report.Would be nice to have some pics.Try it on yur return FRA-CCU flight.Have heard from some travel related guys that the incoming flight to CCU is sold out almost everyday in December.Remarkable for a brand new launch.Way to go LH.
Does anyone have any idea about the effect LH's new CCU service has had on loads on existing giants like BA,EK,AI and GF ?????
According to asenior person at Pune airport who mingles with us NGO folks, LH is one of the 2 foreign carriers who have been given clearances to operate to Pune airport "subject to availability of slots". The other airline is UL.
The day they begin operations to PNQ, free vodka for all a-i-nutters!
and BTW... that station manager of CCU is none other than a very very very dear ex-BOM colleague of ours and is now CCUST... which came as a big big loss to us.. a fantastic person to the core and a very thorough professional. i would say he was my mentor and a good friend.. still in touch with me personally and ofcourse all of us former colleagues. CCU is in very able hands as far as running of the station goes... but as for the route.. well its only the market that can decide...
