Finnair launches direct flights between Helsinki-New Delhi
New Delhi, Oct 30: Finnish national carrier Finnair on Monday introduced its first scheduled service between Helsinki and the Indian capital, hoping to cash in on the growing social and economic ties between the two countries.
The first flight carrying the airlines' deputy CEO Henrik Arle will reach here 10 minutes past midnight tonight, covering the 5,226 km journey in six and half hours flat.
Finnair, which would initially fly three times a week between the two cities, would operate the wide-bodied McDonnel Douglas Boeing MD-11 aircraft on the sector.
With more and more Finnish companies, including the likes of Nokia, Kone and Elcoteq setting shop in India, the carrier hopes to cater to business travellers -- offering 36 lie-flat business class seats on each aircraft.
The Delhi route will be Finnair's tenth Asian destination, reflecting the growing importance of the region that accounts for 40 per cent of the airline's revenues.
"India is a growing economic power house... The gross national product is booming at a rate of approximately eight per cent per year. Both business and leisure travel are increasing by double percentage figures annually," Arle said in a statement here.
"Advance demand for the route has been great, even though we are only just starting the flights. We have also seen a big increase in demand for air cargo from India to Europe", he said.
In other news Air China started DEL-PEK non-stop service with a dilapidated 767. It was the dirtiest bird i've seen land on Indian Airports, it almost looked liked it had been off-roading for a while before they chose to send her to DEL.
