Boeing Starts 787 Dreamliner Assembly

June 30, 2006

All Associated Press News

CHICAGO (AP) - Boeing Co. said Friday it started production on its new 787 commercial passenger plane, dubbed the "Dreamliner."

The plane, first being assembled at Boeing's Handa, Japan factory, uses 20 percent less fuel than similarly sized planes, emits fewer emissions and is designed for quieter takeoffs and landings.

After assembly in Japan, the plane will be flown to Charleston, S.C. for further assembly and then onto to Everett, Washington. Boeing said 28 airlines have already logged 403 orders for the plane, with those commitments worth more than $55 billion. The Dreamliner is scheduled for delivery beginning in 2008.

Shares of Boeing fell $1.05 to $81.95 on the New York Stock Exchange in afternoon trading.

came across an interesting article, so felt like sharing

General Electric GEnx The General Electric GEnx (General Electric Next-generation) is an advanced turbofan under development by GE Aviation for the Boeing 787. After the initial unveiling, GE Aviation decided to also offer the engine for the Airbus A350 and Boeing 747-8. The GEnx is intended to replace the CF6-80C in GE's product line.

The GEnx and the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 were selected by Boeing following a run-off between the three big engine manufacturers. Pratt & Whitney's proposal was unsuccessful, possibly due to having been an all-new, and thus, untested design. The GEnx uses some technology from the GE90 turbofan, including composite fan blades and composite fan case.

For the first time in commercial aviation, both engine types will have a standard interface with the aircraft, allowing any 787 to be fitted with either a GE or RR engine at any point in time. Engine interchangeability makes the 787 a far more flexible or liquid asset, allowing airlines to change from one manufacturer's engine to the other's in light of any future engine developments or when acquiring 787 from other operators/lessors. The engine market for the 787 is estimated at US$40 billion over the next 25 years.

Another first is the elimination of bleed air systems, which use high temperature/high pressure air from the engine to power aircraft systems, e.g. air-conditioning and anti-ice systems. The GEnx and the Trent 1000 allow a move towards the "electric" airplane.

The GEnx is expected to produce thrust of 55,000 to 75,000 lbf (245 to 334 kN) with first tests commencing in 2006 and service entry by 2008. While Boeing predicts reduced fuel consumption of up to 20% the 787's engines are also expected to be significantly quieter than current turbofans.

How does Boeing plan to pressurize the cabin or de-ice the wings on the 787?

Boeing hopes to reclaim glory with 7E7
By Raquib Siddiqi
Sat, 8 Jul 2006, 10:17:00

Boeing has announced that it will build the 7E7, its first new jet model in 13 years. The plane maker has also opened order book for the new airliner dubbed as Dreamliner.

Boeing needs a popular new model to keep Europe's Airbus from permanently usurping its long-held mantle as the world's dominant maker of big jets. For four decades, Boeing has delivered the majority of the world's big jets. This year for the first time, Airbus will deliver more new jets than Boeing.

Nope its not.

It is a specially converted 747 freighter meant for transporting the 787 fuselage parts from various Boeing facilities to Seattle. The rear section of this aircraft opens up sideways to allow loading and unloading of 787 fuselage pieces.

folks

forgot to tell that I have fortunate to be on the Dreamliner Design Team's mailing list.  Was part of pretty much all the surveys they did, and also was participant in the survey where they selected the name.  Sadly, out of four choices I chose Stratoliner which lost to more popular Dreamliner.

To cut long story short, I got an email from them about the new interactive site about B787.  The site is http://dev.newairplane.com/ .  Please feel free to use the
