A Tribune Exclusive Jet unlikely to fly to US; Dawood links questioned Swati Chaturvedi
New Delhi, June 24 In a major setback to the beleaguered aviation major Jet’s plans to fly to the United States, the US government’s Transport Department has asked the Indian government to “verify, investigate and comment on the airline’s alleged financial links with wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and also links with Al-Qaida”.
Jet owner Naresh Goyal’s troubles seem to be never ending as this follows the question-mark over his security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The US Transport Department’s missives were addressed to the MHA, Ministry of External Affairs and the Civil Aviation Ministry.
Although the US has been scrupulous in asking for an investigation saying that these are allegations made by a US aviation company, the request has created a flutter in government circles.
A Civil Aviation spokesman confirmed to The Tribune that the Ministry had received the US request which had been passed on to the Ministry of Home Affairs. “We are in no position to conduct an investigation. Since we are seized of the matter let the Ministry concerned investigate,” said the spokesman.
It may be recalled that even earlier Goyal’s security clearance to be on the Jet board had run into trouble. Despite, an adverse report by the Intelligence Bureau the clearance was eventually given. Following this the Jet applied for permission to start flights to the US, resulting in this fresh trouble.
The earlier IB report sent to the government by the former director, Mr. K P Singh, had asked for investigations about Jet’s funding and its holding company, Tailwinds. The report spoke of alleged links with Ibrahim and wanted fresh in-depth investigations.
With Jet’s takeover of Sahara in Indian aviation’s biggest deal valued at Rs 2500 crore security clearance for Goyal to sit on the Sahara board required fresh clearance.
While, it is still unclear whether the MHA has given Goyal clearance, Janata Dal United chief and former Civil Aviation Minister Sharad Yadav has demanded that Goyal be arrested and clearance be withheld.
Speaking to The Tribune Mr Yadav, said: “The pressure I have faced in the last couple of days, ever since I took up the issue, is tremendous. In my entire political career I have never faced this. While, refusing to name anyone Mr Yadav made it clear that he had even been approached by his own party bigwigs.
“But, I will not give in.’’ he said. With the MHA sitting on the matter and the Jet-Sahara deal turning sour and heading for the courts, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel told the Tribune: “I am only concerned about the passengers and whether Jet flies in India or not. The deal is not my concern.’’

Can someone please tell me what was naresh Goyal working as or with before 9W was started rgds the_380
This should help...
Goyal holds a Bachelors of Commerce degree and after completing his education in 1967, joined the travel business as a general sales agent for Lebanese International Airlines.
Subsequently, he was appointed the public relation manager of Iraqi Airways in 1969 and from 1971 to 1974 was the regional manager for ALIA, Royal Jordanian Airlines.
During this period, he also worked with the Indian offices of Middle Eastern Airline, where he gained experience in various areas including ticketing, reservations and sales.
He was, thereafter, appointed regional manager of Phillipine Airlines where he handled the commercial operations of the airline in India.
He started on his own in 1974 by floating Jetair Private Ltd (then known as Jetair Transportation Private Ltd) to provide sales and marketing representation to foreign airlines in India. Shortly thereafter in 1975, he was appointed regional manager of Phillipine Airline in India.
Finally, in 1992, he took the big step of setting up his airline - Jet Airways. A firm believer in numerology, Goyal is fond of number "5". People close to him say his decision to acquire Air Sahara was also taken on the 5th many months ago.

When he started Kuwait Airways and Gulf Air had 40% equity in Jet Airways.
Similar questions can be asked about several other new entrants. For instance, Indigo claims to have ordered 100 A-320s which is something of the order of 20,000 crore. Who has that much money? They are probably leasing, but still it is a valid question. For that matter where did the money for Air Deccan's rapid expansion come from, as it is not known to be associated with any major industrial group AND is still making losses.
I discussed this with someone who is a senior manager in one of the major financial institutions. He gave the impression that anyone can start flying airliners if they can pay the lease rentals. But it cannot be as simple as that-even if you take a loan for a car or house you need to put down 10-20% of your own money. Perhaps someone on this group can expand on these financial riddles.
See as far as Indigo is concerned its owners are one of the most respected travel agency in Delhi called as Interglobe. These guys are handling the corporate travel division of many corporate houses. I dont think once u make an order for a plane 100% cash payment in advance have to be executed... Hence they might have paid a security if they dont pay the balance amt that amt gets forfeitied. This is just an assumption others can recitify if they actually knw how planes are bought
As far as jet is concerned the problem with them is that they have registered their corporate office in island of mann or something. There is not extradition treaty with them and the corporate companies have an advantage as to their funding pattern cant be easily identified and discussed. Its something like which ship owners do to circumvent laws and rules they register their ships in countries which provide flag of convinience.
The question here is if any unaccountable money especially of arab warlords and gangsters is there in Jet Airways or not. Becoz if there is something needs to be done.
On a personal level i would love to fly an airline which might have corrupt ppl on board but i wont want to fly on an airline which is partly owned by some arab warload who is not only anti india but also a threat towards the world community.
Jet Airways might be a proffesional organization but if they are involved in any way to this man with whom links are being alleged NG should be arrested immediately and try in court

To be precise, the Channel Islands which are supposedly part of the UK but have different laws. A lot of shady activities go on as the accounts of companies registered there are not accessible even to the UK government-which numerous shady characters are exploiting.
There are many more examples of this. In shipping, there are Panama and Liberia which don't have much regulations for safety and staffing so many shipping companies wanting to cut corners register their ships there. All of us have heard of Swiss banks, but there are other places like Liechtenstein, Gibraltar and Cayman Islands which are equally effective. It is said that many large companies exist simply as a brass plate in a lawyer's office in these places, but control billions of dollars.
If Jet does not get permission for the US, they should focus on consolidating the LHR & SE Asian routes. I am sure they will soon emerge as a preferred airline on these routes.
And they hopefully deploy widebodies on the SE Asian routes.
Mel as far as allegations are concerned goverments always keep such thing under the wraps because if such things are disclosed in media it wil spread like wild fire which can further hamper the case at a later stage.
what i reckon is the future of Jet Airways if the allegations are proved.. It will become a serious issue and i guess India doesnt wanna be in the bad books of US by promoting business activities funded by terrorists
