Communication failure with PM’s jet being probed


 New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) A sudden communication failure between a special IAF jet carrying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the air traffic control at the airport here on Saturday is being probed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), airport sources said today.


 Preliminary reports indicated the likelihood of the problem emanating from the failure of ground equipment. The VHF communication system went dead as soon as the plane, on which the prime minister was returning from Bangalore, touched down, they said.


 Alarmed ATC officials re-established links with the aircraft from the IAF’s VIP squadron by switching to an alternate frequency, the sources said.


 When contacted, an IAF spokesman told PTI that ‘‘the aircraft was in continuous radio telephony (RT) communication with the Palam ATC throughout’’.


 Any failure at the crucial post-landing stage could have led to a mishap as the pilots could not have been alerted about which taxiway to take to the parking bay or if there was an aircraft approaching or cruising on the runway or a vehicle was coming on route.


 The DGCA is also checking the entire communication equipment installed at the airport, the sources said.


 The aircraft of the VIP squadron have a completely separate frequency for communications with the ATC. These planes are equipped with the Quadruple Redundancy System having four stand-by systems that automatically take over if one fails.


 


 


The Government is also not happy why the PM's plane was made to circle over Mangalore, atempt and landing and then make it to Bangalore. Feel Mangalore should have clearly stated that a landing was not possible due to heavy rain.

It's likely that the Mangalore atc were hoping for the rain to subside, it's not unknown for the rain to stop or slow down after some time .

Given that it's the govt that runs the Mangalore airport that should have read as "Government unhappy with Government for ..."

Boeing 737 BBJ and A319 BBJ are in the reckoning.

Age has got Nothing to Do with Quality.Maintenance Has.


BTW Tom Squadron Aircraft are Underutilised.I know a few that Operated them & their Views too.Very Well Maintained Aircraft.


Anyway since its the PM BBJs would be Ideal & they are Arriving soon.


About the VHF failure.What about HF

 New Delhi, July 7 


Two officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have been suspended in connection with a communication failure last month between a special jet carrying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the air traffic control at the airport here, official sources said today.


 A K Sangal and O P Saxena, both from the communications wing of AAI, were suspended following a probe into the incident by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), they said.


 The sources pointed out that the AAI had recently issued a directive that officials in charge of communications should be present at key airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai whenever a flight carrying a VIP landed or took off.


 During the probe, it was found that neither Sangal nor Saxena was present when the Prime Minister’s Aircraft landed on June 24 on his return from Bangalore.


 The VHF communication system at the airport went dead as soon as the plane touched down. There was no VHF contact between the ATC and the jet for a few minutes.


 Alarmed ATC officials had then re-established links with the jet from the IAF’s VIP squadron by switching to an alternate frequency.
