CHENNAI: A Rs.4-crore Courier Operator Terminal will come up, in the next eight months, at the old Meenambakkam airport complex, fulfilling the long-felt need of courier operators in the southern region, especially in Chennai.
The two-storey building, to be constructed by the Airports Authority of India, will be equipped with X-ray scanner, fire alarm and truck call systems, and Surveillance Closed Circuit TV.
Chennai Airport Director Dinesh Kumar and AAI officials, led by R. Ganesan, General Manager (Engineering), performed a `bhoomi pooja' on Wednesday. Later talking to presspersons, Mr. Dinesh Kumar said the project was cleared by the AAI Board. The 25,000-square feetterminal, when completed in February next year, would serve as a "courier hub," facilitating hassle-free operations. This is the second such facility; the first one was set up in New Delhi under private-public partnership.
International air cargo was growing at the rate of 14 per cent at the Chennai airport.
