Proposal to create ’no fly’ zone around Taj Mahal Agra,
June 23
Authorities here have sent a proposal to the Indian Air Force to create a ‘‘no fly’’ zone around the Taj Mahal to protect the 17th century monument from vibrations generated by aircraft. The proposal was forwarded by Divisional Commissioner Ashok Kumar to officials of the IAF, which has one of its largest bases in Agra, official sources said. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is also being consulted on this issue, the sources said. ‘‘If the propoal is accepted and implemented, it could mean prohibiting flights up to a radius of seven kilometres from the Taj,’’ said a source in the IAF. ‘‘It would also mean that VIP and other flights, including helicopter flights from Lucknow, would have to land elsewhere,’’ the source said. The sources said such flights could be permitted in special circumstances. The Agra airbase is home to numerous Il-76 heavy transport aircraft while the Army too has a paratroop training facility there with several An-32 aircraft. Experts have contended that the vibrations and emissions from these aircraft could damage the Taj Mahal, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The 350th anniversay of the construction of the monument was marked by celebrations in September last year. Millions of tourists visit the Taj every year.
Why wud someone want to stop aircrafts flying there why dont they stop the industries nearby and the oil refineries at mathura which release pollution that is turning the Taj yellow?
(ps-this is what my ssc science-II text book says)

Boss there is only 1 refinery in Mathura owned by Indian Oil. Secondly massive steps have been taken to control air pollution in agra which includes closing down of illegal manufacturing units and electroplating units also...
There is no petrol or diesal driven vehicle around Taj Mahal. All auto operating around taj Mahal are Battery driven. if they close Mathura refinery there is going to be a massive oil shortage in North and Central India...
I feel that some institutions in India need a no-fly zone, such as the airspace over the P.M. wherever he/she is, the Indian Parliament and other facilities as such.
However, Qutub Minar (spelling?) and Hirrudin's tomb and mostly, the Taj probably don't need such protection, IMHO. Why?
Because they are all vestiges of Mughal rule and hence are Muslim sites or Muslim architecture. Even the most violent Islamoterrorist would not desecrate a Muslim place.
BTW, the security at the Taj is so corrupt, so lackluster it is laughable.

Actually the airspace over PM's residence is a no-fly zone, at the cost of Safdarjang Airport.
No Tex, the sites you mentioned are very vulnerable, the perpetrators of such crimes will make them target to fuel tensions in India. Although the likelyhood of such a thing happening is less as nothing happened post-Mumbai blasts.
If there is anything that terrorists will never blast, then it is Bhakra Nangal dam on river Sutlej, as the water from artificial lake would flood Pakistan.
