A new airport located near Tibet’s border with India and Myanmar will start operations in July, state media said Wednesday, further opening the Himalayan region to the outside world. The new Nyingchi Airport, which cost 780 million yuan (97.5 million dollars) to build, will become the third civilian airport in Tibet, Xinhua news agency said. The other two airports in Tibet are in the regional capital of Lhasa and Qamdo, a prefecture bordering China’s Sichuan province, it said. The new airport, with an annual capacity of 120,000 passengers, is 400 kilometers (248 miles) east of Lhasa and located at 2,949 meters (9,732 feet) above sea level. The lower altitude at Nyingchi will make it easier for visitors, many of whom tend to suffer from oxygen deficiency in Tibet, to adapt to the highland climate, the report said. Nyingchi city is also located near the Grand Canyon of the Yarlung Zangbo River, one of the world’s largest canyons that drops down from the Himalayan plateau, flows through eastern India and reaches sea-level in Bangladesh where the river is knows as the Brahmaputra. The Nyingchi airport will be managed by Chengdu-based Air China Southwest Branch Company in Sichuan Province. Together with the 1,956-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet Railway that is expected to start trial operation on July 1, Tibet is expected to see a mass influx of tourists. No way.
It was a China Eastern scheduled flight. Can locate the pictures for you. Passengers were treated to a lion dance on the tarmac.
But there will be a regular China Eastern 757 service with Schenghou and Beijing month-end. Expcected to boost tourism as the Lost Valley is in the area. One of the world's unexplored canyons and has thick jungle.
