Smoke alert diverts passenger jet
A passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing after the pilot reported smelling smoke in the cockpit.
The American Airlines flight, from London Heathrow to JFK in New York, touched down safely at Dublin airport in Ireland at about 1000 BST.

All 135 passengers got off the Boeing 777-200 to allow it to undergo an inspection by engineers while airport fire services were on standby.

It is thought there may have been a problem with an oven in the galley.

The plane was expected to resume its journey at midday.

2 Vietnam Airlines pilots suspended for not communicating with ground

Civil aviation authorities suspended two Vietnam Airlines pilots whose aircraft lost communication with ground control for more than an hour during a flight to Germany.

Radar signals from the brand new Vietnam Airlines Boeing 777 -- flying from Hanoi to Frankfurt and carrying more than 200 passengers -- failed for 65 minutes as the aircraft flew over Ukraine, Poland and Czech Republic on April 17.

Czech air traffic controllers said they tried to contact the plane for 25 minutes without response, and eventually the Czech air force sent two jet fighters to flank the airliner, the report said. The pilots then realized their mistake and turned the communications system on, it said.

"The chief pilot and his assistant did not correctly follow flying formalities; they failed to communicate with the control stations," said Duong Van Thao, head of the Aviation Safety Standard Department in the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam. He declined to elaborate on how the communications were lost. It is believed they switched off crucial equipment.

The two pilots must undergo more training before they will be allowed to fly again, Thao said.

Ill pilot forces jet to land
A BRITISH flight carrying 185 holidaymakers was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Greece after the captain complained of feeling unwell.

The Monarch Airlines Boeing 757, which was travelling from Luxor in Egypt to Manchester, landed safely at Athens airport at around 9pm British time.

A spokeswoman for the airline said the captain felt unwell after taking off from Egypt and the flight was diverted to Greece as a result.

He was able to walk off the plane after the landing to receive medical attention from paramedics, she added.

The passengers, most of whom were on package holidays in Egypt, will now be delayed by several hours as a new crew is flown out to Greece.

Paramedics

"They landed safely and everything was fine and he (the pilot) actually walked off the aircraft and is with paramedics now.

"We are now sending an aircraft with a new crew which will be leaving Manchester soon," the Monarch spokeswoman said.

She added that the whole crew needed to be changed as the original crew would have ended up exceeded their working hours limit.

The new flight back to the UK was due to take off from Athens at around 3am British time and arrive back in Manchester at about 6am, she said.

"There would not have been time to get the passengers into a hotel and back again so we will leave them in the airport with meals and drinks until the new crew arrive," she said.
