THAI AIRWAYS / COLOMBO EMERGENCY LANDING

Agency

Passenger tells of panic and confusion on flight

June 4, 2006

A passenger on the Thai Airways flight from Colombo to Bangkok that was forced to make an emergency landing minutes after its second attempted take-off on Saturday says there was panic on board, even though the airline's new president played down the incident.

"There was a big bang from the east wing where the engine was, and the plane started to descend. There was no public announcement telling us what to do and everyone started to panic," said the passenger who asked to remain anonymous.

The passenger, a Bangkok-based tour company executive, said that passengers, in a state of shock, pulled out their life jackets and started to put them on while a flight attendant ran frantically up and down the aisle telling everyone to keep calm.

"The plane was losing altitude fast over the ocean and everyone was hoping for the best. Fortunately the pilot managed to control the aircraft and make a safe landing back at Sri Lanka international airport," said the passenger.

The Airbus A330 aircraft carrying 225 passengers and crew took off from Bandaranaiake International Airport as scheduled around 1.25 am on Saturday but was forced to turn back after reports of engine trouble.

"Our first take-off lasted for around 20 minutes before a fire alarm went off due to some kind of malfunction, according to the pilot," the witness said.

He added that all the passengers were made to wait for more than five hours as engineers and mechanics rushed to the scene. Everyone was then asked to board flight TG 308 for the second time, which resulted in what he said was the near-death experience.

After landing for the second time and being cleared from the plane they were taken to the airport lounge again before everyone was assigned a partner to share a hotel room with until THAI could find a replacement flight.

"Eventually everyone was given seats on alternate airlines that were bound for Bangkok and I just arrived this morning [Monday]

"The most annoying thing about all of this is that nobody bothered to tell us anything and we were left in the dark with only one drink of water to keep us calm during the whole ordeal," he said.

However, the new president of THAI said on Saturday that the emergency landing by one of the company's aircraft at Sri Lanka international airport was due to smoke in the plane's cargo area.

Apinan Sumanaseni said the plane had to land at Bandaranaiake airport after the aircraft's system reported smoke in the cargo hold.

The pilots used fire extinguishers to douse the fire and then landed after everything had returned to normal in order to carry out an inspection. All passengers and crew were safe, and alternative arrrangements made for all passengers to fly to Thailand, he said.

Thai flight makes emergency landing at Sri Lanka airport

June 4, 2006 - A Thai airways flight from Colombo to Bangkok made an emergency landing Saturday at Sri Lanka's only international airport shortly after take-off, airport officials said.

The Airbus A-330 aircraft carrying over 225 passengers and crew reported engine trouble and returned to the airport after being in the air for a few minutes, an official said.

"We were told there was some problem with an engine and the pilots decided to turn back," an airport spokesman said. "The aircraft is being checked and the passengers have been moved to hotels."

There was no immediate comment from the airline.

Thai Airways president says emergency landing in Sri Lanka came from smoke in cargo compartment

The president of Thai Airways has revealed that the emergency landing conducted by one of the company's aircraft at the Sri Lanka international airport was due to smoke coming out of the cargo area.

Flg.Off. Apinan Sumanaseni said the Airbus A-330 carrying 225 crewmen on board the flight from Colombo bound for Bangkok had to land at the Bandaranaike airport after the aircraft's system reported smoke in the cargo area. The pilots had used fire extinguishers to put out the fire, and landed after everything had returned to normal in order to carry out inspection.

All passengers and crew were safe, and all passengers have now arrived in Thailand through flight re-arrangements.

The American National Transportation Safety Board has ordered an enquiry to look at  fuel tank issues.

Thats scary! Thank God no one was hurt. One common thing is the absolute panic that sets in when an incident like this happens. Its the same anywhere in the world!!

What is not clear is if passengers started to wear or inflate lifejackets in the plane. Did they inflate them?

There is a lot of controversy about this as a study by the cabin crew training centre for British Airways says that passengers are better off inflating lifejackets much later.

In an incident where an Ethiopian Airlines 767 was hijacked and crashed into the Indian Ocean after the pilot got into a serious fight with a hijacker, passengers had already inflated the lifejackets. It was shown to interfere with evacuation and created obstacles at the emergency exits. Boeing said more lives could have been saved if passengers had inflated jackets after exiting aircraft.

Emirates in its safety video, clearly shows that passengers must inflate after getting out of the plane and getting a signal from the cabin crew. But it's fine to say that in theory. When it usually happens, panic is a huge danger. People hardly listen. Can't blame them. Escaping when the plane is in water seems terrifying.

must try and keep cool when in danger. panic does no good i attended a special training by Topsline where they said that when ur in a sinking ship inflate the life jacket well in advance before you leave the ship

take ur pick

airlines tell you to inflate after you leave the aircraft and whereas these guys ask u to inflate ur jacket "Well in advance"

logically any explanation for this...curious to know

Actually all airlines (or most of them) want pax to inflate them as they exit the aircraft, not sooner.

An IA A300 cabin crew said when they are trained in emergency (it is different in the propeller plane) and if the plane has to be ditched, they should see to it that passengers wear the life jacket but should not inflate it inside the plane; it will almost certainly block exit because of the dimensions of the cabin (enclosed space), panic situation and the possibility of parts of the cabin piercing an inflated lifejacket. There is also a smoke/fire possibility where it is best to have passengers have clear vision of their surroundings. The lifejacket is not to be inflated until clear of the plane. One reason is that in a few moments where you are sitting is going to be underwater. If wearing an inflated device a passenger is going to float to the highest point in the cabin and remain there. This will be a serious obstacle.

Priority is to get everyone out quickly. Once you are at the exit, you inflate and jump.

An inflated lifejacket is almost like having a huge closefitting balloon around your neck and the area you can see around you is a bit limited.

The crew then have to collect and deploy life rafts, collect all signalling equipment and survival gear that ideally should all be combined in one or more convenient packs or included in the crew life jacket or life raft.

It sounds fine in theory, but suppose the plane breaks up in an ocean, passengers are better off having an already inflated lifejacket. The impact will be very sudden and so much water around, you really won't be calm and trying to wear your life jacket.

The crew member said it all depends on how the pilot manages to land the plane (there are various situations) and then how much damage there is to the structure of the aircraft. The pressure of the water entering the cabin might sometimes prevent exit till a balance between the pressures has been reached. There is also the communication between the cockpit and cabin crew. It is very tense and cabin crew have to judge by looking out also. Worst situation is an emergency over water at night.

One thing i like in IC is that when flights are delayed most of the times (except if situations like july 26th floods where all flights were delayed) they really offer good service.

4 years ago i was returning from Kolkatta to Mumbai and IC was operating an A300 which those days used to carry out the Kolkatta -Singapore sector via Yangoon i guess.

But the flight was delayed by nearly 3hours from SIN and the time ws about 9.30PM. And IC offered all passengers full dinner by Oberoi Hotels. There were different menus for 'J' class and 'Y' class (buffet ofcourse)

Difference was not mch ofcourse but as we were flying in J class we had about 4 veg dishes and 2 non-veg dishes along with 3-4 sweet dishes and of course 2-3 salads and soups, etc.

Excellent food.

Had a similar experience last year at GOI. The IC flight I was about to take to BOM was cancelled and merged with a flight leaving later. We reached the airport on time and were quickly handed our boarding passes. IC staff politely requested us to board a waiting coach to take us to the nearby Hotel Airport Plaza (which btw does the on-board catering for flights departing Goa) for a lavish buffet lunch. After a wait in their lounge for a couple of hours, we were taken back to the airport. Of course, with such a nice lunch and a full tummy, no one wanted the snacks served on-board which btw was pretty nice too

Air Deccan engine develops trouble, makes precautionary landing

Kolkata, July 22 (UNI)

An Air Deccan scheduled flight from Hyderabad to the city made a precautionary landing at the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International airport here this afternoon after its right engine developed trouble enroute.

The Airbus 320 with 150 passengers and crew faced problems with its right engine about 300 nautical miles from Kolkata airport, according to Air Traffic Control(ATC) sources.

The Commander of the aircraft shut off the engine and continued to proceed towards Kolkata after informing the ATC here.

Airport authorities here informed the Indian Air Force authorities at Kalaikunda to ’deactivate’ the air space over the airbase for the expeditious flight of the affected aircraft over the air force region.

Air Force authorities temporarily stopped all routine air exercises to allow the civilian aircraft quick passage.

The plane landed safely at Kolkata airport at 1355 hrs. UNI XC SP

Snag hits Jet's London-Delhi flight

NEW DELHI: Over 100 passengers abroad a Jet Airways London-Delhi flight had the most harrowing flying experience of their lives when one of the four engines suffered a mid-air "burn-out".

"After about two hours of flight, there was a loud 'thud' and we saw sparks coming out of one the engines," said Satya Prakash, a passenger on-board the flight on July 15.

"Thankfully, it didn't lead to a a fire and the engine was switched off, but we could see on our television monitors that the aircraft was fast losing altitude. It created a panic situation inside the aircraft," he added.

The aircraft was turned around, fuel dumped and returned to London. But this, passengers say, was just the beginning of their ordeal. They allege that the airline didn't accomodate them in hotels till late in the night, a charge that Jet Airways denies.

"There was a technical fault and it was rectified. All passengers were taken care of, put up in hotels and acomodated on British Airways and Jet Airways flights to Delhi and Mumbai. These allegations are baseless," said a Jet spokesperson.

But the passengers have a different story. "When we boarded the flight, we were informed that there was a technical fault. Later, the captain announced that it has ben rectified and we took off. Incidentally, this burn-out happened in the same engine which was so-called rectified.

This just shows the callous attitude of the airline," says Prakash, who has even shot off a letter to civil aviation minister Praful Patel seeking his intervention in the matter.
