Interactive GoAir Captain

Hi All,

I was flying GoAir on the BOM-JAI sector back in March 06. The departure from BOM was around 8AM, which is a pretty busy time with a string of arrivals and departures. We finished our taxi run and were waiting at the entrance to the runway. The wait was for over 5 minutes; sensing the impatience of the passengers, the Captain came online and announced that we were awaiting a landing and would take off soon. He asked those sitting on the left rows to look out of their windows as the landing aircraft would soon be visible. Soon enough, a Jet Airways 737 appeared out of the haze and made a picture perfect landing.

I think this was a good gesture on part of the Captain to break the ice and build rapport with the passengers. Its always good for the passengers to know that they are fying with a pilot who knows whats going on in and around the aircraft. Not many pilots do this though!

and an Indian Captain

Indian's Captain Indrani did this recently on the Chennai to Kolkata sector via Vizag and Bhubaneshwar.

While approaching Vizag, she explained why the plane had to circle over the sea before landing between the two hills and why we would be late as an IAF 737 was on the ground. Watch it take off she said to passsengers on the left. We could make out a moving object and then see it take-off.

A little later we moved in to land.

After landing, she even came to the door to wish passengers for Vizag.

shudnt reveal this but here it goes

I was in IC from KTM-DEL in an A300 and the captain seeing me alone took me to the cockpit. There was an autopilot trimmin error and this was his reaction

"Oye chod de yaar aise hai fly kar lete hain ke gal hai aise bhi toh bees sal purana hai kabhi bhi gir sakta hai"

imagine my reaction i was 8 that time and flying alone

In 2000, IA used to operate the A300 on the Delhi to Chennai sector. Evening flight.

Once we boarded, the cabin crew found that the intercoms and the PA were dead. The Chief Airhostess then contacted the Commander, who then got the technical staff to check it. After 25 minutes of trying something it still didn't work. Commander too came to the cabin and supervising the work. Cabin crew busy testing the telephones on the sidewalls and then indicating that they were dead.

We heard a noise and then a faint voice asking the technical staff to disembark. The cabin crew were asked to get to their stations. They then did something and it started working. The safety demonstration was over and the PA went dead again.

After we crossed Bhopal, there was a loud screeching noise. Then the Commander and Co-pilot were overheard using swear words and cursing the PA. And the Co-pilot clearly said "1,2,3 mike testing, 1,2,3 mike testing".
Went on for 6 minutes.

Everyone burst out laughing. Several VIPs on board -- Subramaniam Swamy, Chandralekha, N. Ram, Manoj Sonthalia, the Tamil Nadu Industries Secretary Santhanam and the Tamil Nadu DGP Rajagopal --- couldn't believe it.

hehehe I have always thought that pilots in India don’t communicate that much.

Even if pilots have to stick to the old 'departure time' and weather routine they are much more informal in America at least. More prone to tell jokes (B6 ring a bell?) and be laid back. I think it’s great, I don’t see myself getting ready for a flight and not talking to my passengers :)

There used to be, maybe still is, a Commander on Air Sahara, "Danny" Mehta I think his name was, used to give long speeches and sight-seeing remarks. When flying three in front he would stroll around and chat with everybody. Haven't heard him in a while, I think he was Bombay based.

And then there are the strong and silent type. Often wonder if they are asleep in front. Likely, too?
