What about the male crew? I hear they recruited a whole bunch of Hotel Management types recently.

Oh common cougar they cant give orange and purple uniforms to the male crrews obvious they wud be continuing with the regular black trouser and white shirt uniforms.

By the way i wanted them to have uniforms like those in IT

Apparently IC is grounding quite a few of its older male cabin attendants and shifting them to ground duties and such leading to some disgruntled staff. The uncle types with specs etc are apparently the first targets. After all they are loosing out on valuable flying allowances!!

And these gentlemen are being replaced by "Hotel Management types with jhagmag hair gel and earrings". The words of one such disgruntled gentleman not mine!!

Shocking if this is really as large-scale as is being made out!! I for one havent seen a single male purser with "hair gel and earrings". EVER!

Uniforms like in IT? Yeah baby: dream on! Imagine IC aunties in short skirts with their hairy legs and armpits showing!! Brrrr!

dude, the grounding has not just been happening for the male crew members, but also for their female counterparts. This happened a few months ago when the IC management was on a drive to shrug off the over-weights.

And these gentlemen are not replaced by the new recruits, as there were plans to recruit the new lot anyways. The new recruits are a mixture of hotel management grads, ex-S2 crew, ex-9W crew and other international airline ground staff employees.

"jhagmag hair gel and earrings". ahaha, well, what can I say, earrings for male crew members...the disgruntled guy must be kidding. Not allowed as per company policy.

lol about the IT uniforms for the aunties...

Has it ever occured to anyone here, how come in its 50yrs of existence IA has never come up with a impressive uniform for its frontline staff i.e. Cabin crew and Check-in/Reservation.

IMO this is reflective of the collective lack of quality and standards prevalent enterprise wide in this airline.

But they still manage to turn a decent profit, top the industry in On Time performance and provide decent service while they are at it.

They may not be top-notch as far as service goes. IT does a far better job an d9W is much more efficient with the inflight service.

However IC is PROFITABLE. Something which the others arent.

This makes AI's shortcomings all the more glaring: Poor service, Pathetic maintenance standards, Poor management, and huge recurring losses despite a deprecated fleet handed down by the govt and hughe subsidies also provided by the govt. Hence the argument to close down Air India.

Indian ties up with German bank for financing new fleet

Indian ties up with German bank for financing new fleet

New Delhi, Sept 28: Public sector airlines Indian has tied up with a premier German bank to finance the first ten of the 43 aircraft it has ordered from the European manufacturer Airbus Industrie.

German national bank KFN would loan 540 million US dollars to Indian for these ten aircraft, following which negotiations would again be launched for the remaining planes, Indian chairman and managing director Vishwapati Trivedi told reporters in an informal interaction here.

The ten aircraft, a mix of A-319s, A-320s and A-321s, would be inducted by 2008, he said, adding that the first A-319 would land here on October 19.

The government has granted a sovereign guarantee on 36 per cent of the entire amount of loans to be taken by the state-owned carrier.

With two wide-bodied A-330-200 to be leased by the domestic carrier before the next summer season, Indian plans to expand its international route network to Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong and the UK, Trivedi said, adding though London Heathrow was "not on priority right now".

On renewal of the insurance cover for its fleet, Trivedi said the carrier had succeeded in reducing the entire premium burden by as much as five million dollars or 31 per cent, compared with the previous year.

Public sector New India Assurance Company has been selected for providing a coverage worth 750 million dollars. (Agencies)

I am optimistic about MAN or LGW, and SYD

Airborne again

Ravi Teja Sharma / New Delhi October 05, 2006

AVIATION: Inflight entertainment will soon keep fliers glued to their seats.

The buzz in the Indian skies today is the low-cost carriers. But at the other end of the market, full-service carriers (FSCs) are going all out to woo the traveller with state-of-the-art inflight entertainment (IFE) systems.

Internationally, the IFE marketing is growing at about 10 per cent a year. Kingfisher Airlines, Indian, Jet Airways and Air India have all ordered the latest inflight entertainment options for their new aircraft. In fact, Air India has asked Thales to retrofit six of its Boeing 747s for about $30 million, which will be delivered early 2007.

The latest, says Francois Dupont, country director for Thales in India, is audio and video on demand (AVOD), inflight television, and, in a while, Internet connectivity.

Thales and Panasonic Avionics Corporation are the two main players present in India. Thales has about 129 confirmed orders from airlines such as Indian, Air India and Kingfisher Airlines. Panasonic, on the other hand, has orders for IFE systems from Jet Airways.

“The most exciting new orders for Panasonic are from Jet Airways, selecting our most advanced systems for the new deliveries of A330, Boeing 777 and Boeing 737,” says David Bruner, director of strategic product marketing, Panasonic Avionics Corporation.

Thales has orders worth $200 million from India. Indian has ordered the latest Thales I-5000 with movies-on-demand for its brand new fleet of 42 A320 family aircraft, while Air India, apart from the six retrofitted Boeing 747s has ordered IFE systems for 23 Boeing 777s (which are yet to be delivered and the systems will be fitted at the Boeing assembly line).

Thales’ USP is its flexibility, open architecture and cost, says Dupont. “With our open architecture, airlines can add on any new technology that gets developed in the future,” he explains.

Jet Airways, meanwhile, has unveiled its new Sky Screen inflight entertainment system which will offer on-demand audio and video entertainment in both the Club Premiere and economy classes on its first new generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

According to the airline, passengers on board these aircraft will have access to over 100 hours of shows from Bollywood and Hollywood, eight audio channels and over 70 audio CDs, games and iXplor — a moving map that gives locational insights into the flight plan.

The aircraft, with the Panasonic eFX system, has 9-inch video monitors mounted with touch screens in Club Premiere, and a 7-inch touch screen monitors at the back of every seat in economy class.

Kingfisher Airlines ordered its Thales IFE systems right when the airline was launched. Kingfisher’s economy class has the Thales I-4000 with individual screens, five video channels and 10 channels of Kingfisher Radio, while the Kingfisher First class is equipped with the I-5000 with movie on demand and 16-inch screens.

The growth of the IFE market in India could have been even faster, but low cost carriers will never opt for IFE, says Dupont, cost being their biggest consideration.

What is coming soon, probably early next year, is live TV onboard, followed by onboard broadband connectivity. And yes, IFE onboard will soon go wireless as well.

NEW DELHI: At a time when national carriers are facing all sorts of troubles with their aging fleet, Indian will witness the induction of first new-generation aircraft ordered by them next Thursday.

A brand new Airbus, A-319, will join Indian's fleet. The airline had placed an order worth $ 2 billion for 43 Airbuses, said a spokesperson.

"We will get the first plane next week when it flies in from Hamburg via Sharjah. The A-319 has a maximum cruising speed of 850 kmph and a range of 5,500 km. It is a 122-seater plane with eight executive class seats,"said an airline spokesperson. The induction function will be presided over by civil aviation minister Praful Patel.

The A-319 will be the 74th plane in Indian's fleet. The airline and its subsidiary Alliance Air currently have 48 A-320s, 11 Boeing 737s, five A-319s, three A-300s, four ATRs and two Dorniers.

"The other planes would be delivered between June 2007 to March 2010. They would be fitted with the latest CFM engines,"said the spokesperson.

IA to launch low cost carriers

Arun Kumar and Gaurav Choudhury

New Delhi, October 18, 2006
Indian Airlines in its new avatar, has decided to take the competition unleashed by the new low cost carriers head on.

With its present market share down to 24.2 per cent, IA needs to fight back, and soon. Thus it too will soon start a low frills carrier service on regional routes, with flights of durations less than 90 minutes, using  smaller aircrafts like Canadian Regional Jets (CRJs), Bombardiers and ATR Turboprops.

It will be operated by its subsidiary Alliance Air and will operate on routes like Delhi- Chandigarh, Mumbai -Pune, Delhi - Jaipur, Mangalore-Bangalore etc.

The company intends to induct the aircrafts required - new six regional jets, and an equal number of ATR Turboprops  over the next two months. Regional jets and Turboprops normally have a seat capacity of between 50 to 70 passengers.

“Low frill does not mean there will be no hospitality at all. We shall offer light breakfast and other similar services”, Chairman and managing director of IA Vishwapati Trivedi told Hindustan Times.

“The idea of inducting smaller aircraft for shorter distances is to increase the occupancy and enhance efficiency”, he added. IA presently has an occupancy rate of above 70 per cent which is expected to increase in the winter season.

Simultaneously IA is also getting five leased Airbus A 320s for its regular services, while phasing out aircraft more than 15 years old. The average age of IA’s fleet currently is around 12 years, but with the induction of its new aircraft the average fleet age is expected to drop to about six years.

With 13 engine sent out for complete overhauling, facilities in India are working to over capacity. This will cost $ 3.5 million ( Rs 15.75 crore) per aircraft. Trivedi admitted that this has resulted in a strain on the company’s cash flow but was confident that IA would clock profits during 2006-07.

IA’s present market share is 24.2 per cent, which is expected to increase after the introduction of the low frill service and the coming winter season traffic.

Arrival of the new A319. (VT-SCF)

Happened to see a few pictures by PTI and Reuters and a video of the programme.

Press was allowed on the tarmac while the plane was taxiing in. Security had to ask them to be a bit careful.

After the stepladders decorated with marigold were attached, PP and the IA top brass went in. PP was in the cockpit (left seat) for a long while while Trivedi was in the "right" seat. Trivedi was also quite interested in the controls. Looking around for a long time.

PP then posed with the 3 cabin crew and the commander and co=pilot. Cabin had half of Delhi airport on board as everyone wanted to be a part of the historic moment. But everyone had their ID cards prominent.

Pictures of Y cabin look plain. Couldn't see any of the IFE. The seats look ordinary and are in dark blue. When you compare it with Kingfisher's Y it's nothing. No seat back monitors. Looked hard and see it.

The three cabin crew then posed near the engine. Two of the saris are in the new Konark colour scheme and look very smart. Predominantly orange. The other is the same pleasant blue as in the seat colour.

PP then came down, waving and then began the pooja. Press had to be told not to damage the landing gear as a few of the heavy camera equipment touched the nose wheel.

PP then headed back where he began his famous "IA/AI, you better buck up or get out" speech.

Trivedi was very uncomfortable. May be not the right time as IA has finally got the first new and owned plane it has been trying to get for years.

Plane then took off later for Kolkata, where it is to be based.

Ok. Confirmed that IFE is only for the rest of the new fleet. Is to be Thales 5000i, which is a very advanced model.

CNN-IBN (Oct. 23, 10.30 pm) says that IA is going ahead with its plan to make Alliance Air into a low cost carrier. It is also going ahead with plans to buy 6 regional jets for Alliance.

Wonder what happened to the plan of merging Alliance with Air India Express which Thulasidass and Praful kept reiterating.

Wonder what sort of merger there's going to be anyway between IA and AI.

Interesting development.

Makes the merger issue "complicated"?

Indian plans major capacity expansion
Oct 23, 2006, 16:30 GMT
printer  email  RSS  Talkback

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) India's government-owned domestic air carrier Indian Monday reiterated its resolve to go for a major expansion by acquiring additional aircraft in the near future to meet the requirements of a buoyant market.

'The enhanced capacity is planned to be met through leasing of five Airbus A320 aircraft and six smaller jets at the earliest,' an Indian spokesperson said after the company's board meeting.

'Indian hopes to induct these 11 aircraft by the spring of 2007. In addition to this, an expansion of its international network will happen when the two already leased wide-body A330 aircraft arrive in June and October next year,' he added.

With the planned leasing and the arrival of its own Airbus aircraft, Indian's total strength of the A320 family would go up to 64 by the end of 2007.

'The plan to have a mixed fleet of varying capacities is primarily to provide more non-stop flights, more frequency, greater convenience to passengers and more daily operations,' said a senior official of Indian, earlier known as Indian Airlines.

'This would be possible with smaller aircraft, leaving the larger capacity aircraft to be utilised for high-density routes,' he added.
