ON A FIRM GROUND: Asha Ram (third from right), Executive Director (Aviation Safety), Airports Authority of India, Delhi, inspecting the new runway at the Bajpe airport in Mangalore on Thursday. M.R. Vasudeva (second from right), director, AAI, Bajpe airport, is seen.

MANGALORE: A six-member team of officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) headed by Asharam, Executive Director (Aviation Safety), AAI, Delhi, inspected the new runway and safety aspects at the Bajpe airport here for three days from Tuesday.

Mr. Asharam told The Hindu at the airport on Thursday said that the new runway was one of a high quality, and pilots were happy with it.

He said all safety aspects for aircraft landing and take off had been taken care of. Other supportive components of safety were in place.

Mr. Asharam said that the AAI had asked pilots to provide feedback on safety aspects.

The instrument landing system (ILS) was being installed.

Expressing happiness over the markings, installation of lights and the quality of work, he commended the team of AAI officials at the Bajpe airport for their efforts and dedication. The new runway had been designed to handle aircraft such as Airbus 320.

Mr. Asharam said aviation safety measures differed from one airport to another. The AAI had to take into account the local conditions.

The trans-installation of instrument landing system (ILS) at the new runway would be ready in a few days, M.R. Vasudeva, Director of the AAI, Bajpe airport, said.

The ILS played a pivotal role in aircraft landing and taking off in extreme weather conditions. If a pilot was not able to land the aircraft under visual flight rule (VFR) then he could seek the help of ILS, he said.

He said wthat ith the new concrete runway, the grade of the Bajpe airport had gone up from 3-C to 4-D. With the installation of ILS, its quality had gone up to category I ILS. The simple approach lighting system was available on both sides of the runway.

    Distinction

Mr. Vasudeva said it was the only airport in the State to have a second runway. The periphery road surrounding the runway would help in the quick movement of relief vehicles, fire tenders and security vehicles. It will be the first flight from an international destination. It will be an important development in the history of the Bajpe airport which was declared as "customs airport'' by the Union Government recently.

The tourist flight of APA Air System FZC, a UAE-based company, will operate between Sharjah and Mangalore on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • Air India Express is next.

    • It is the first full concrete runway in the State
    • The first flight may land at 10 a.m. and take off at 10.35 a.m.
    • Night landing equipment installed at the runway

Mangalore, May 10: As a precursor to the formal commissioning of the new runway at the Bajpe airport, all aircraft will land and take off on the new runway from Wednesday, according to sources in the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Sources have revealed that the new runway, which is the second at the airport, would be formally commissioned later. The new runway is 2,450 metres long and 46 metres wide. It is the first complete concrete runway in the State. It can handle the operation of large aircraft such as Airbus 319 and Airbus 320.

At present, Bajpe airport handles six flight schedules a day (one way). The number of daily flight operations (landing and take off) is 12. All these flights will operate from the new runway from Wednesday. Of the six flight schedules, two are for Bangalore and four are for Mumbai.

As per the schedule of daily flights at the airport, the first flight from Bangalore (Jet Airways 9W520/519) will be the first flight to land on the new runway at 10 a.m. and take off at 10.35 a.m. if there is no delay in its arrival.

The AAI had deposited Rs 50 lac with the State Government in March 1989 to hand over 186 acres of land for building the new runway. The Government handed over land only in September 2003. The AAI began work on the new runway in April 2004. Rains between June and August that year forced the AAI to suspend the work. The AAI completed the concreting of the new runway on January 12 this year. The remaining work was completed in March. The night landing equipment has been installed on the new runway.
