Had just been on a trip to Thailand. The airline was Sri Lankan (UL). I should say that I was impressed with their service. Much much better than Air India. My flight out of Mumbai was UL-144 on a Saturday morning at 0325. Sri Lankan offered us a one-day stopover in Sri Lanka absolutely free of cost. Our connecting flight to Bangkok was UL-888 on Sunday at 0140 (IST/Sri Lanka time). The airline transferred us to a really nice beach resort on the outskirts of Colombo, all meals included. The room was plush and the food was great.....what more can one ask for?
UL flies A-320s on the BOM-CMB sector and A-330-200s on the CMB-BKK sector. The A-330 is one awesome machine. Although its a twin-engined jet, its got an amazingly long wingspan. You can actually see the wingtips even from the middle row of seats!! The seating in Economy is 2*4*2 and in Business, it is 2*2*2. Their cabins are really neat with PTVs in both Business and Economy. The choice of programs - both audio and video is quite good. I enjoyed an episode of "Friends" and "The Simpsons" But the most amazing part of their A-330s is that they have two external cameras fitted - one forward and one downward looking. These cameras give you a pilot's eye view of the scene outside. It is quite cool to watch the scene especially while taxiing, taking-off and landing. They also have something called "Airshow" which basically displays the progress of the flight on a map of the region. A great way to while away those boring hours especially on night flights.
The inflight duty free shop is also neat with a good variety of perfumes, cosmetics, spirits and jewellery! I bought one of their cool A-330 scale models
You can look at some of the pics taken during the trip at:

No longer a novelty! Was pioneered by Emirates in late 1990s. After that most airlines have statrted offering this. Airshow too is quite stale.
Infact it is quite amusing that Air India talks about the Airshow as the ultimate in IFE in their First Class cabin. Check their website and you'll find a huge paragraph about this.
But once the new AI fleet starts coming in, there will be something very new and quite a few surprises as far as IFE is concerned. AI realises that it has to fit in everything possible and offer a unique IFE package.
Even Indian has a few surprises up its sleeve! Watch for it when the new planes come in.

thanks for sharing. Why the hell would one want to fly AI's BOM-DEL-BKK.
where fares competitive? I mean including your stay in BKK?
UL definately provides reasonable fares on the asian routes and middle east. And thanks to the free stopover holiday their excursion level fares are always first to get filled up. Yes indeed A330-200 is a nice machine But my heart still beats for the B777-300ER which is one hell of a machine.
Nice to know Vivek u enjoyed the flights keep on flying and keep filling up this column.
Yes, the fares were equivalent to Thai Airways & Air India BOM-BKK direct flights. And in addition to this, the warm service on UL means that I would never fly Air India unless I do not have any other option left!

I will be in BKK for 4 nites before coming back to Delhi . Will be staying in the Siam area which is the central shopping district. Any tips vivek as to what to see and what not to see... me putting up at Baiyoke Sky Hotel...
The Baiyoke Hotel is reasonably good. I stayed at the Royal Benja Hotel which is off the main Sukhumvit Road (Nana station on the BTS Skytrain).
Siam area is good for shopping. The prominent shopping malls there are: MBK (famous for clothes, electronics, etc - branded), Siam Center (large number of branded boutiques), Siam Discovery Center (jewellery and high end consumer goods), Siam Paragon (again branded stuff). There is a famous street market near the Indra Regent hotel called Pratunam Market where you can buy stuff like T-shirts and stuff at a great bargain at approx 75 to 90 THB.
Buy a one-day pass on the BTS Skytrain which costs 100THB and is valid for unlimited travel on the same day. The Skytrain is a great way to explore the city as you wont get stuck in traffic jams or get conned by the cabbies. Check pics taken by me at BKK to give you a rough idea of what to look for:
The main tourist spots in BKK are: The Golden Buddha, Reclining Buddha, Emerald Buddha, Erawan Shrine(near Chitlom/Siam stations on the BTS). Do visit the city railway station if you have time to get an idea of the railway system there.
If you have any more questions email me
