June 2, 2006 Union minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran at a function in Ooty said the Coimbatore airport would soon be developed into a major international airport.
"I have spoken to Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel to consider making the Coimbatore airport an international airport. It already has a runway of 9,000 feet. If it is made into an international airport, IT parks can be set up and IT investments will flow into Coimbatore," he added.
(More international airports? Almost every airport in South India is international. Chennai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore(?), Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin, Calicut (and if the Kerala Government has its way, it might get a fouth one at Kannur) Mangalore, Bangalore.
He has also asked Praful Patel to consider setting up of a cargo complex at the Coimbatore airport. The airports at Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli had to be modernised.
Maran also said the Union government would extend its full support in making a Ooty a world-class tourist destination. It would also consider a long-time project of the Nilgiris--a helicopter service between Coimbatore-Ooty-Bangalore.
(Ooty has a helipad and the main users are the Tamil Nadu Governors and till recently former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa)
Well there is a massive influx of blue collared workers to dubai from this region. Well declaring a particular airport as an international airport doesnt give some sort of special medal to the airport apart of bit ramping up of the infrastructure to support that operation like a customs and immigration department setup. U might see better advertisements and maybe better customer service....
But in a way its better because rather than they coming dead drunk on any of the major airports and showing their antics among foreigners and trying to create a wrong impression its better to ship them to gulf right from these smaller airport..
I know my statement is more of a generalised as no person is the same but then thats what the preception of such people is normally. They might have come in a higher income bracket thanks to these gulf jobs but as the saying goes Money cant buy class....
I wonder how aunties keep up with them on the AIX flights...
even today in true sense TN has just one good international airport that is MAA while in Kerala there is COK and TRV
well i think its not a bad idea to start an airline called maybe somthing like South India Airways. This wuld fly all economy from destinations like TRV, MAA, COK, etc to DXB and SHJ maybe wid a fleet of A320s. The breakeven wuld take less than 1 year and well provide better service than "aunties" as per vabby said.
Hows the idea

The Kerala Government was lobbying hard to start Air Kerala just around the time Air India Express was being launched.
The then Chief Minister (ironically Congress!) even went to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and Mr. Praful Patel, but Mr. Patel reacted a few days later to imply that it would be violiating the rule of not allowing airlines to fly abroad till after 5 years of continuous operations.
The Chief Minister then tried to sweeten this by saying that the Kerala Government would offer a stake in Air Kerala to Air India!! After that there hasn't been much news about the project.
The Gulf Associations periodically agitate against the oppressive fares of AI and IA and then the whole thing dies down.
Air India also rewards its Gulf passengers annually by offering them small gifts for their "continued and valued patronage". The last time it was a tiny gold coin.

Well, that's a bit of a nasty thing to say. Disagree with it totally.
... they are actually quite well-behaved. There may be just a few who get out of hand, but that is not reason to label all of them as being uncouth.
This is actually a major issue at the various Pravasi Divas meetings. How the well-heeled NRI Indian has the government of the day falling all over him/her, while the poor yet equally important NRI in the Gulf and Far East gets ignored as he falls mainly in the category of "blue collar".

Keep up? Dancing to their tunes?
Hope you mean keeping an eye on them!!!
No aunties. There is a senior crew member deputed from Air India to keep an eye on things till they get the required number of hours of experience. The cabin crew are young and fresh-faces!
