Hi

all aviation fans from South Asia and fellow members of Anet.sa, just stumbled upon the idea of creating a forum. No intention to bypass the Anet.SA, infact would want it to be an adjunct to it.

Lets experiment with the idea and see how it goes.

thanks

Hi Vabby,

I would not like to see the Yahoogroup shut down as it is pretty much established.  Moreover, we can upload our contact information, files, photos etc. That should remain the backbone

The way I see it is that only the discussions are carried over here.  Pretty much a evolving situation.

Moreover, carrying forward from Yahoogroup, I have changed settings here to allow you Mods duties. You can now Edit posts, Moderate posts and Ban users. Other mods whenever they join will get the same.

thnx

Aseem

Hi all,

If you'll allow me to play the devil's advocate for a bit ...
Why exactly are we creating this forum?

For aviation enthusiasts, anet is a great resource. There, you have both desis and non-desis contributing to discussions centering around aviation in S. Asia. For example, someone might give a headsup about the delivery flight of a new AIX bird. Now why would that person take the trouble of signing up in yet another forum and posting that info here?

Laxdesi's Indian threads on anet have been enormously successful, and provides an ideal space for chit-chat about aviation scene in India. What is the need for duplication of that effort?

For those who don't want to signup to anet for whatever reason, yahoogroups is a good alternative. Why create an alternative to an alternative?

In fact, unlike Indian airports, the anet-sa yahoogroups isn't exactly bursting at its seams! There is a lot of under-utilized capacity. Once the number of emails per day crosses that line into ridiculasia, an alternate forum such as this one might be needed. Until then, this forum is premature at best.

My 2 (insert your favorite currency)!

hi Naresh,

Welcome to the forum. If you've read carefully my introductory mail, it is pretty much clear that this is an experiment in creating a new face of already established Anet.SA yahoogroup. That Yahoogroup has been in existance for long and was created for the convenience of those who don't want to sign up on A.net.  That being said, the reason why one has to sign up seperately is because it is not possible to transfer the list from Yahoo to this place.

The presence of Yahoogroup and this sister forum in no way undermines the good work done by Laxdesi. That thread being on A.net is altogether a different story. Were all desis willing to sign up for A.net, there wouldn't have been a need for Yahoogroup in the first place.

Moreover, Yahoogroup is the right place for primary membership.  All new members are advised to sign up over there first.  So far all those over here have a membership over there as well. Same applies to the moderators.

Again a reminder, this forum is an adjunct to Yahoogroup, not a substitute.

Please let me know if you have any more queries.

regards

Aseem

Aseem,

Welcome to the forum. If you've read carefully my introductory mail, it is pretty much clear that this is an experiment in creating a new face of already established Anet.SA yahoogroup. That Yahoogroup has been in existance for long and was created for the convenience of those who don't want to sign up on A.net.

Yes, I read the introductory email. I know this is an experimental setup. My question (to reiterate) is regarding the need for the experiment, i.e., an alternative to Anet-SA Y-Group. If there was a vigorous exchange of emails on the Y-group that was overwhelming our inboxes, then an alternative forum is warranted.

Were all desis willing to sign up for A.net, there wouldn't have been a need for Yahoogroup in the first place.

I don't see the reason for every desi (interested in aviation) to sign up on anet.
-For those in India (or desi-land at large), $25 may be a non-trivial amount.
-Speaking for myself, I am a desi living in the US. I'm not plugged into the aviation scene either in India or here. So I have almost nothing to contribute that is informative. I suspect many non-member visitors to the anet fora are in the same boat. As an aside, our local aviation yahoogroup Washbaltspotters has some very knowledgeable people!

Now if insiders like Sean (B747-xxxB) are on this forum, I think this forum could have some novelty! I should mention, as a moderator on flyertalk, he posts interesting info from time to time.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling and procrastinating. I really should get back to writing my paper - oh the joys of defining Riemannian metrics!

You reserve the right to have your view, but I have to take into account of others who have bothered to sign up and made positive contribution.

Thats one reason Yahoogroup was created. And this experiment is being done to give it a feel like A.net. You are not the only one in this experimental forum who is living in NA. And I really wonder why you bothered to sign up when you are not plugged into aviation scene, anyway it is good to know that you have nothing worthwile to contribute.

Yes you should. That's the only thing that will give you solace.

have a nice day

Hmm... In my best teenage girl's impression: "What-e-v-e-r!"

As I mentioned earlier, I suspect there are many people like me (in NA or SA) who are interested in aviation, but have no direct ties to insiders in the industry! I rely (sic!) on the info provided by the newspapers/postings on anet.

Aseem, as someone who wants others to carefully read emails, perhaps you should take your own advice. Please do not twist my words, and make it out to be something I never said or implied! Case in point: "you are not the only one in ... NA".
When did I ever say otherwise? Cue in comment from my earlier posting about "...are in the same boat."

I have made my point. And you have, yours. Clearly, you are glossing over my comment about this forum being "an alternative to an alternative." Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Bottomline: relax. No need to get your panties twisted in a wad!

Relax guys take a chill pill....

I agree that A.net is a great source for aviation related information. But then its a global aviation forum. I feel Anet.Sa can differentiate from that forum in way that this one is more indian centric. For Indian aviation info all we have there is the digests which are present in the discussion forum and offcourse the pictorial database and trip reports. There is still alot which needs or can be researched...

For example look at Global Pia .net They are a fan site of PK (Pakistan International Airlines) and they way they have details about PIA and its operations and stuff is absolutely fantastic. From meals, to airports, to the crew, everything anything related to PIA is there...

I would like to see Anet.SA do the same for Indian aviation..

We have decided to take an initiative lets see how much we are successfull. Atleast no harm in trying..
