Bangalore, Dec. 14

The first Hawk advanced jet trainer being customised for the Indian Air Force had made a successful maiden flight, according to its maker, BAE Systems. The version, called HT001, had its test flight "without a hitch" at the Warton facility of the British aerospace major. It was transported for first assembly a month ago, a release said.

HT001 is the first of 66 Hawk AJTs being acquired for the IAF. The first 24 aircraft will be built by BAE and delivered from September 2007 onwards. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd will make the remaining under licence at Bangalore and expects to have the first one out in 2008. Forty IAF pilots have received interim training at RAF Valley in Wales, as per the deal the Government of India and BAE signed in March 1994.
