SriLankan Airlines to add Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to its destinations

The Associated Press

Published: November 13, 2006.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka's national carrier SriLankan Airlines said Monday it will expand its services to the Middle East region by adding the holy city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to its destinations.

The airline said it planned weekly flights to Jeddah, its third destination in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh and Dammam, that will commence in the coming weeks.

"Jeddah would be the airline's 51st destination in 28 countries and this would increase to nine the number of destinations in the Middle East, providing greater connectivity between the region and Asia," the airlines said in a statement.

The airline added the Indian sea resort destination of Goa with twice-weekly flights in October.

SriLankan Airlines is 40 percent owned and managed by Dubai-based Emirates Airlines. The Sri Lankan government has a 51 percent stake and employees own nine percent.

Just wanted to let the group know that I counted 12 new billboards put up by Srilankan in a single area of Pune- Railway Station to Koregaon Park, RTO and Bund Garden side. Looks like they are pretty darn serious about Pune! Atleast one billboard gave a pune specific URL: I think it was srilankan.aero/pune, but that is not working.

Neways, I think they could easily do PNQ-CMB-PNQ daily with a 2330-02:00 departure ex-PNQ connecting to the far east and Middle east!

SriLankan Airlines introduces e-ticketing

Published: Thursday, 16 November, 2006, 10:59 AM Doha Time

Staff Reporter

SriLankan Airlines has introduced e-ticketing to Qatar, making it one of the first international airlines to promote new technology in the Middle East state.

The e-ticket will replace the current paper ticket by 2007 as part of an International Air Transport Association (IATA) initiative to streamline the booking process and curtail operational costs for airlines.

SriLankan Airlines has aggressively introduced e-tickets across its network, relieving travellers of the burden of lost, forgotten, misplaced and damaged tickets, said the airline’s country manager Lakshman Weerasooriya.

Travellers have the convenience of walking up to an airport check-in counter and just asking for their boarding card, giving their booking reference, name, passport number or their frequent traveller number if it was given at the time of booking.

"We want to give our growing clientele the convenience of travelling without the hassle of a paper ticket", Weerasooriya said.

"With SriLankan Airlines now flying non-stop from Doha to Colombo and vice versa from October, we wanted to give our travellers a better experience and take away the hassle of holding on to a ticket, which is a big step in our service strategy."

The new schedule to Doha from Colombo includes two direct flights and two flights with a transit stop in Bahrain.

The move signifies Doha’s importance in the airline’s network, particularly as it has performed well for the first five months of the current financial year, growing by about 50% over the previous year.

"We need to plan for further growth, and as a preferred carrier into South Asia, we have to constantly innovate our service to keep up with customer expectations and convenience," Weerasooriya said.

The airline earlier this year made a commitment to improve its services to the Middle East, which is forecast to grow at 4.4% annually up to 2016 by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The new schedule pushes up SriLankan Airlines’ services into the Middle East to about 45 flights a week, increasing the number of connections available to passengers flying to Colombo or to India, the Maldives and the Far East.

SriLankan Airlines is the largest foreign carrier into India, with 87 flights a week in to 10 destination, including Goa, added to the network from October, he said.

Sri Lanka to construct second international airport

COLOMBO, Nov. 19 (UNI)

Sri Lanka launched the construction work of its second international airport Sunday in the deep southern district of Hambantota.
President Mahinda Rajapakse who is marking the first anniversary of presidency on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the airport at Weerawila, about 255 km southeast of Colombo.
Minister of Ports and Aviation Mangala Samaraweera, who is alsothe foreign minister, said that the project costing 125 million U.S. dollars was expected to be completed in the year of 2009.
Under the first phase the Weerawila international airport wouldbe able to accommodate eight large aircraft at a time. The 1,150-hectare airport will comprise of a 4,000-meter runway, parking space for 14 aircraft at a time and other modern facilities when completed. ‘‘The new airport would provide impetus to the economy and tourism. The tourist would then have the option of flying direct to the south’’, Samaraweera said.
At present the island’s only international airport, the Bandaranaike international airport, is located at Katunayake, about 40 km north of the capital Colombo.
The extent of the Katunayake airport is 490 hectares. Though well equipped with modern facilities, it can only accommodate 25 aircraft at a time. The number of planes operated per day from the current airport is approximately 120.
Rajapakse inaugurated construction work on a 4,000-metre runway at the domestic Weerawila airstrip to upgrade it as the country’s second international airport and an alternate landing venue to Colombo airport.
‘‘I will not say that development is not possible because of heavy defence expenditure. We all need to work harder to ensure economic progress,’’ he said.
‘‘We are building this second international airport so that A-380 planes could land here,’’ Rajapakse said at a ceremony televised live on national TV.
Aircraft arriving in Sri Lanka must now carry enough extra fuel to divert to the Chennai international airport, 300 kilometers away, in case of an emergency at the Colombo international airport.
However, once completed in November 2009, Weerawila, 180 kilometres from here, will be the alternate landing venue.
Costing an estimated USD 125 million dollars for the first stage of development, Weerawila will be able to handle two million passengers a year, Rajapakse said.
There are plans to set up a sea port near Weerawila at Hambantota as well, he added.

The new airport is also to be a base for Sri Lankan airlines and Emirates. Emirates, a partner in Sri Lankan is expected tp park a few A380s at the new airport.

SriLankan flies to Goa; plans Jeddah services

SriLankan Airlines is enhancing its services throughout the Middle East and expanding its network by launching flights to Goa, with plans to commence services to Jeddah shortly.

Kuwait will receive 10 flights per week in the winter schedule, up from nine previously.

Direct flights to Bahrain from Colombo will also begin, with two flights direct and two more via Doha. This will improve capacity on flights to both Doha and Kuwait.

Simultaneously, there will be an increase in capacity on existing flights to Abu Dhabi.

Connectivity has also been increased between Asian and European destinations.

Twice-weekly services to Goa began on October 30, making it the 50th destination of the airline, and the 10th in India.

“The addition of Goa also gives SriLankan Airlines the unique advantage of being the only airline to connect passengers with the best beaches in South Asia, with regular flights to Colombo, the Maldives, Goa and Kerala,” said SriLankan Airlines’ chief commercial officer Barry Brown.

He said: “As a competitive international carrier, SriLankan Airlines recognises the need to explore new markets, and to expand our services in existing ones.

“We are regularly reviewing our routes to see how we can best serve our passengers and adding new services wherever opportunities arise”.

The Goa services will bring the total number of Indian flights to 87 per week, maintaining SriLankan’s position as the largest foreign carrier into the country.

Capacity has also been increased to two other Indian destinations, Bangalore and Calicut, by upgrading existing flights from Airbus A320s to the wide-bodied A330s.

Brown added “We expect our Goa service to be very popular, and flights have been aligned to provide the shortest possible transit time for passengers on our flights from Europe and the Middle East.”

With its winter schedule coming into effect, arrangements are being finalised to commence flights into Jeddah, which would be its third destination in Saudi Arabia, the others being Riyadh and Dammam.

Jeddah would be the airline’s 51st destination in 28 countries and this would increase to nine the number of destinations in the Middle East, providing greater connectivity between the region and Asia.

SriLankan Airlines’ Middle East, Africa and CIS regional manager Mohamed Fazeel, said: “The impending launch of services to Jeddah, coupled with changes to the Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Bahrain schedules, will improve our services throughout the Middle East.”

Highflying women take to the skies with SriLankan Airlines

Mathematics and management may have little to do with the mechanics of a commercial airliner, or does it? Two aspiring young women found out as they challenged the status-quo, to become commercial pilots.

While most opt to find employment in their academic background, two women with high academic qualifications backing them, recently received their wings as junior first officers from the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, making them only the second and third female pilots of Sri Lanka.

The entry of Chamika Rupasinghe and Roshani Jinasena into commercial aviation also signifies SriLankan Airlines efforts to attract individuals with high academic qualifications, the airline said.

Ms. Rupasinghe, a graduate of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura and a final year Chartered Institute of Management (CIMA) student, recalls being laughed at when she was about ten years old, for her ambition to fly.

She joined the SriLankan Airlines’ family back in February 2000 as a stewardess hoping to one day pursue her dream.

Ms. Roshani Jinasena meanwhile, has a BSc Honours in Business Management from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.

Getting her private pilot’s licence at 17 while awaiting her Ordinary Levels results, Ms. Jinasena said she then knew that flying a commercial airliner was to be her future.

Both women said they had to overcome a number of hurdles, starting at home, in convincing their parents to let them pursue their ambition.

A considerable number of parents view aviation as a full time vocation that would interfere in the family life of a young woman.

On the job acceptance among male peers was another challenge along with learning the entire technical aspect of aviation and the quick analytical judgement required of a pilot.

While the profession is not for the faint hearted, the two women pilots said it was a great feeling to be flying above the clouds.

SriLankan Airlines has continually fostered an open work culture, allowing aspiring individuals to pursue any career they desire. But the individuals have the arduous task of standing up to the challenge in the chosen field.

SriLankan Airlines’ Chief Pilot A320 Navin de Silva said, "it is encouraging to note that women with very high academic qualifications are choosing to be pilots when they have a myriad of other, less demanding options."

"We are hopeful that more women will consider becoming pilots and even more parents would better understand the vocation."

A team of 203 local and expatriate pilots currently fly SriLankan Airlines’ all Airbus fleet and are some of the most experienced pilots in the world.

The airline encourages and supports staff to take on new initiatives and challenge themselves in new roles within the airline.

SriLankan Airlines Manager for Qatar Lakshman Weerasooriya said 'The additional flight will help meet current demand we are experiencing on flights on the Doha Colombo route.'

The move signifies Doha's importance in SriLankan Airlines' network, particularly as it has performed well for the first five months of the current financial year, growing by about 50 percent over the previous year.

The additional flight pushes up SriLankan Airlines' services into the Middle East to about 46 flights a week, increasing the number of connections available to passengers flying to Colombo or to India, the Maldives and the Far East.

Srilankan airlines should be allowed to operate intra-India flights. That will be a welcome addition to the existing options for air travelers within India. In addition, it will help integrate the two economies, starting with aviation.

India should invite its neighbors to contribute and benefit from the around 9% GDP growth forecast for the next few years.
